Who's Your Authority Figure?

Hi. Minna and Andy from Foco Academy, where you can subscribe to our online courses that will boost your performance, productivity, health and longevity for both your mind and body.

Who's Your Authority Figure?

By now we'd probably know who will be occupying the White House next year. And, looking at the numbers, I was right. The votes, turns out, is about 50-50. What I'm saying is, whoever won the election, half the people will be happy, the other half of the people would be upset.

Isn't that amazing? Arguably the most powerful person in the world, 1 out of 2 people will not like him. Some probably hate him passionately.

Either way, regardless of which country you are in, most people would see their country's leader as a authority figure. That person may be a president, a prime minister, king or queen, or a sultan. And even on a lower level, the governor, or even the mayor. These so-called 'leaders' are often seen as the authority figure and the people are supposed to trust their judgement.

In some sense, you are putting your life in their hands. They are the ones making decisions for you. Their laws and orders will affect your live somehow.

Is that how you like it? What if the authority figure is not your choice? Do you still have to comply?

I know what you are saying,

'I might not like it, but don't I have to comply to their orders anyways?'

Now if you think back into your life, who are your authority figures? Who have given you instructions on how you should live your life?

Some of the common culprits may be your parents, your teachers and professors, your doctor, the police. Now. how many of these authority figures did you choose? I mean with the president at least you get to vote for that person.

You don't get to choose your parents. Don't get me wrong. I am sure your parents love you. And they wanted the best for you. But do they always give you the best advice? I am betting that they don't always. Yet you always listen right. Maybe you took over the family business. Maybe you decide to take up the same career as your mom or dad. Had I been a better in school, I may have been a medical doctor because my mom really wanted me to be one.

What are some lies that your childhood authority figure may have told you? How about these ones:

You need to do well in school to get a good job

You should hang out with 'the good kids'

To maintain a relationship you need to make sacrifices

And so on, and so forth. By now you know it's not true. There are tons of highschool and college dropouts who turn out to be geniuses in their businesses. The good kids turns out to be the losers. And if you are in a fantastic relationship, well, congratulations, and you know it is not true that you need to sacrifice. I mean, Andy and I have been together for 32 years and never had I felt like I was sacrificing anything to make our relationship work.

So, let's talk about now. You are all grown up. You know better than to just take somebody's else's advice. Now, you can choose your authority figure.

Here's what I mean. If you are happy with where you are, if you are exactly where you want to be, well, congratulations and have a great life.

But for most of us, there is something in our life that is not working out. We want to have more, to be more. We want to be happier, healthier, more joyful, we want more fulfillment, more peace and freedom in our lives.

So if that's the case, here's my advice for you. And it's up to you whether to listen or not. Find your own authority figure. Find your own teacher, your guide, your Yoda, or mentor. Find someone who is where you want to be, and who is willing to guide you to get you to where you want to be.

Look. We are into November now, the new year is just around the corner. The year 2021 will be here before you know it. What is your resolution for 2021? Do you want to be happier? Healthier? Do you want more freedom? More joy? More fulfillment? Do you want to help more people? Make a bigger contribution to your world?

It is time to think about what you want for next year, and find someone who can guide you to get you to your goal. Because, trust me. Without your Yoda, you would never be the Jedi that you are meant to be.Alright. I'd love to hear from you where you want to be in the year 2021 and who your guide would be. Let me know in the comments below.
